LCO Announces 2021-22 LCO New Cohort

London Chamber Orchestra (LCO) has announced the 2021-22 cohort of its LCO New scheme, which supports emerging composers who haven’t yet heard their work performed by a professional orchestra.

LCO would like to congratulate the five successful applicants: Alexander Papp, Darius Paymai, Florence Anna Maunders, James Banner, and Robert Crehan.

These composers will take part in meetings and collaborative group workshops throughout the summer with LCO’s 21/22 Composer in Residence, Freya Waley-Cohen. Each workshop offers participants the opportunity to work with LCO musicians to compose a new piece for LCO. All five new pieces will be performed and recorded at LCO’s 22/23 season opening concert.

LCO New Winner Florence Anna Maunders said: “I’m so excited and grateful to be working with the amazing London Chamber Orchestra. It’s an incredible opportunity to collaborate in the creation of some really thrilling new sounds. I’m so looking forward to making incredible new noises together with these wonderful musicians!”

Fellow winning applicant Alexander Papp said: “I feel really honoured to be able to write for the LCO and join their community. Being able to write for a professional orchestra for the first time will allow me to take risks in the music and not hold back, something I feel very excited about! It is such a wonderful opportunity and I can’t wait to get started!”

Panellist and LCO 21/22 Composer in Residence Freya Waley-Cohen commented: “I’m very much looking forward to working with these talented composers and can’t wait to see what they create for the London Chamber Orchestra’s season launch concert in September.”

Going forward, LCO New participants will form a network of alumni who enjoy an ongoing relationship with LCO, including access to pre-concert events, rehearsals of new works by the LCO Composer in Residence, and the opportunity to sit in on future LCO New workshops.
