‘I love being by the sea’

Accordionist Ksenija Sidorova takes on our speed interview.

Who have you learnt the most from?
Undoubtedly my teachers at my local music school and at the Royal Academy of Music, Marija Gasele and Owen Murray respectively.

What has been your career highlight so far?
I would say my debut concert at the Carnegie Hall with my colleague and friend mandolinist Avi Avital and legendary Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Who is someone you admire in music and why?
I admire Paavo Jarvi and I’m so lucky to be working with him frequently. A true musician, who is always challenging himself, always looking to learn new things and besides, a wonderful person.

Why and how did you start performing?
I think this came quite naturally as I was studying at the music school, performances were part of our yearly exams. Then came competitions. And in the midst of all of that I realised that I enjoyed performing!

What is your earliest musical memory?
Probably the little accordion my grandmother gave to me – that’s how my relationship started with this wonderful instrument.

What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months?
Lots of new exciting projects, including residency at Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, two new concerti for accordion and orchestra, one by 4 times Latin Grammy winner Claudia Montero and another one by a foremost Latvian composer Arturs Maskats, many chamber music projects with my friends – Avi Avital, Nemanja Radulovic, Andreas Ottensammer and Camille Thomas amongst others.

Is your family musical?
I do have very musical people in my family, but none of them is a professional musician. This is probably why I like to joke that it might be the reason I play the accordion!

How and when do you practice?
If I’m travelling I try to practise whenever I can. At home, usually in the afternoon or evening, this is when my creativity works best and mind is at peace.

Do you have any skills or talents that most people don’t know about?
I enjoy cooking and my husband says I’m pretty good at it!

If we went to the pub, what would you order?
Gin tonic and maybe nachos!

What are your passions outside music?
I’m a home person, so I try to put things in order when I enjoy some time at home, cook and another one that I always try to fit in is gym!

What’s your perfect holiday?
Some time with my family in Latvia or somewhere by the sea other than Latvia – to completely relax and recharge my batteries. I love being by the sea and enjoy some sunshine!
