Programme

Britten Two Portraits for String Orchestra

Lera Auerbach Sogno di Stabat Mater

Shostakovich Symphony No. 14 in G Minor

Hannah von Wiehler conductor

Throughout history, the arts have always provided an escape and an outlet for creativity at times of human suffering, providing relief from challenging struggles. This evening celebrates music reflecting on life’s joys and purpose during trying circumstances. We invite you to hear these works, understanding the context under which they were written, (we can now relate to Shostakovich feeling despair and writing in isolation due to a flu pandemic all too-well) where a clear message is portrayed – the arts and music are essential to human existence.
