Worlds of Reflection (Postponed)

Nicholas Korth Inscapes
(world premiere)
Britten Serenade

Stravinsky Pulcinella

Anthony Halstead conductor
James Gilchrist tenor
Pip Eastop horn

Experience an exhilarating programme highlighting two of 2021’s musical anniversaries. Benjamin Britten’s haunting Serenade for tenor, horn and strings was written in 1943 for the composer’s partner, the tenor Peter Pears, and the legendary horn player Dennis Brain, the centenary of whose birth falls in May 2021. British tenor James Gilchrist joins LCO alongside horn soloist and LCO principal, Pip Eastop to bring this visionary music to life. Igor Stravinsky’s death 50 years ago is commemorated in the second half. There could be no better excuse to enjoy his irresistible ballet Pulcinella, based on 18th-century pieces – especially as LCO gave its UK premiere in 1925. The concert opens with a new work by British composer Nicholas Korth, himself a celebrated horn player, praised by conductor Martyn Brabbins for his use of the natural overtone system in “soundworlds of great individuality and originality”. The conductor is Anthony Halstead, who began his career as – guess what? A horn player.

Don’t miss the pre-concert performance from LCO Music Junction participants.
