Strauss Oboe Concerto

Brahms Symphony No. 1

Gordon Hunt oboe

Romantic lyricism contrasts with sharpetched 20th-century music in this varied programme, conducted by LCO’s music director, Christopher Warren-Green. The evening opens with this season’s big anniversary composer, Igor Stravinsky and the idiosyncratic world of his Octet for Wind Instruments, the UK premiere of which was given by LCO in 1925. The oboe is centre stage for Richard Strauss’s concerto: written in 1945 in the closing days of World War II, it was inspired by the German composer’s encounter with a 24-year-old American intelligence officer, John de Lancie, who was also a professional oboist. Stationed near Strauss’s home in Bavaria, he visited the composer and asked if he had ever written an oboe concerto. Tonight we hear the mellow and lyrical result with the celebrated oboist and LCO principal, Gordon Hunt as soloist. The concert concludes with Brahms’s Symphony No. 1, which on its premiere was promptly labelled “Beethoven’s Tenth”. Similar to Beethoven? “Any ass can see that,” Brahms growled.

Don’t miss the pre-concert performance from LCO Music Junction participants.
