The exciting young conductor Chloé van Soesterstède takes LCO’s podium for the first time tonight. The concert opens with a beautiful addition to the repertoire: Concert Overture written in 1873 by the Swedish composer and organist Elfrida Andrée (1841-1929). Lavishly romantic, it may reach our ears for the first time in this programme, but hopefully not for the last. After this, step back in time to enjoy the shining virtuosity of the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, friend and colleague of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. The concerto, dating from 1803, was written to show off the skills of the famed trumpeter Anton Weidinger, and presents the soloist with an exceptional musical workout, tonight performed by the award-winning French trumpet soloist Lucienne Renaudin Vary, returning to perform with LCO after a triumphant Toyota Classics tour in the Autumn of 2019. The programme ends with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, a dazzling work filled with the composer’s characteristic elemental energy.
Don’t miss the pre-concert performance from LCO Music Junction participants.
