“Dennis Brain’s horn playing – so expressive, so finely shaded…verged on the miraculous.” So said a 1949 review of the legendary British horn player, whose centenary falls in spring 2021. Tonight’s concert was inspired by his remarkable legacy. Brain performed at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and during World War II he often played in Dame Myra Hess’s National Gallery lunchtime concerts; tragically he was killed in a road accident in 1957, aged 36. At the centre of the programme is Benjamin Britten’s In memoriam Dennis Brain, poignantly, an unfinished fragment, paying him a heartrending tribute. Composer Timothy Jackson is principal horn with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and we hear two of his virtuoso works involving the instrument:
Spiegelstück, which receives its London premiere tonight, and Three Worlds, featuring no fewer than 12 horns, comprising talented students representing all four of the London music colleges. Haydn’s Concerto for 2 Horns is a delectable classical display work, and finally Schumann’s Konzertstück is a unique miniature concerto for 4 horns, rounding things off on a rousing note.
