If Mozart had lived in 20th-century Paris, would he have written like Poulenc? It’s not impossible. The French composer’s brilliant textures, inventiveness, high spirits and deeply lyrical melodies have much in common with Salzburg’s famous 18th-century prodigy, making them ideal concert partners. With Christopher Warren-Green conducting, LCO is joined by two special soloists: the great French pianist Pascal Rogé performs Poulenc’s evocative short piano concerto entitled Aubade and the magnificent Organ Concerto is played by the British organist, conductor and presenter Anna Lapwood, director of music at Pembroke College, Cambridge. The second half offers a rare opportunity to hear the ballet music from Idomeneo, one of Mozart’s first major successes on the operatic stage, and the concert ends with his ‘Haffner’ Symphony, an exuberant and stirring work that shows him at the very peak of his powers. Both the Idomeneo ballet music and Poulenc’s Aubade received their UK premieres from LCO in 1948 and 1929 respectively.

Don’t miss the pre-concert performance from LCO Music Junction participants.
