    Performing wonderful music.
  4. The worst?
    Morning orchestral rehearsals.

    Real golf (aside from searching for the ball in the rough).
  6. What does it feel like to be Derek Welton?
    Mostly pleasant.
  7. Who was the last person you called?
    My fiancée Karoline.
  8. What keeps you awake at night?
    Being concerned about not getting enough sleep.
  9. What makes you go to sleep?
    Red wine.
  10. Animals or plants?
    Animals.
  11. Or humans?
    Depends which ones.

    Lagavulin.
  13. What’s the last thing you listened to for pleasure?
    Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

    For the soul? Bach. For the voice? Wagner.

    Tenor.
  16. What would you do if you couldn’t sing?
    Continue with my linguistics studies, I’d hope.

    Friedrich Nietzsche.
  18. Puppies or kittens?
    Kittens.
  19. Pre-show ritual?
    A decent—and not too large—meal a few hours beforehand.
  20. What’s top of your bucket list?
    To visit Antarctica.
  21. What do you fear?
    Ignorance.
  22. Name your favourite character.
    Betsey Trotwood.
  23. Do you play an instrument?
    Piano and the bagpipes.
  24. Are you any good?
    Piano: not nearly as good as I’d like.
    Bagpipes: after some 15 years not playing, probably not very!
  25. Let’s go on holiday. Where are we going?
    Iceland.
  26. What do you wear on stage?
    By choice, all black and an open-neck shirt.
  27. Best piece of advice?
    Being kind is more important than being clever.
