Music Junction Events

The first two Music Junction projects commenced in 2010, working with Barnardo’s Meadows and Tonbridge Grammar School in Kent and Barnardo’s High Close School and Bradfield College in Berkshire.

Preparatory activities
Pupils from the participating schools visited LCO London rehearsals in preparation for the Music Junction workshops. At these rehearsals students met LCO musicians for refreshments and had the chance to try out various instruments, guided by the musicians. Then they sat inside the orchestra during the rehearsal and visited the mobile recording studio. Pupils also went behind the scenes at the rehearsals for the Classical Brits where LCO was performing.

‘Inside the Orchestra’ workshops at Meadows and High Close Schools
LCO visited Barnardo’s Meadows and High Close Schools for ‘Inside the Orchestra’ workshops. Pupils from the Barnardo's schools sat inside the orchestra (conducted by Robert Max), which was made up of LCO players and pupils from the partner schools (Tonbridge Grammar School at Meadows and Bradfield College at High Close). LCO workshop leader Tim Steiner involved LCO, Meadows and High Close and partner school pupils in an interactive session, playing percussion instruments with the orchestra. There was also an informal break when pupils and musicians were encouraged to meet each other and try instruments.

Music Junction in Kent
In autumn 2010 the Kent project worked on a piece inspired by Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, led by workshop leader Tim Steiner and LCO musicians.

This piece, entitled ‘Beethoven 5 revisited’, was showcased at Tonbridge Grammar School on 17 November 2010 and at LCO’s season concert at Cadogan Hall on 19 November 2010.

Music Junction in Berkshire
The Berkshire project, working with Barnardo’s High Close School and Bradfield College was showcased at Bradfield College on 1 March 2011 and at LCO’s season concert at Cadogan Hall on 5 March 2011.
