from Quetta Kaye
"I have seen many chamber orchestras around the world, but I don't think any seem to enjoy performing in the way that the LCO so obviously does!
"So what's your secret?
"Whatever the answer, many thanks for such wonderful evenings."
Put the top players together in one team, then enable them to give all they have to offer artistically and know how to accept it
from Milada Zatecka
"Who is YOUR favourite conductor?"
I have many, but I think Riccardo Muti was my biggest influence
from Roan Smith
"Do you have an iPod and if so what are your favourite tracks?"
Yes and my favourites are all the old re-masters
from Phillip Payne
"Which composers do you consider will come to be seen as the most significant of the latter twentieth century?"
Benjamin Britten. I'm biased because I grew up alongside his genius. There are more though - too many to mention
from Bethan Wright
"If you were put on a desert island which recording, book and luxury would you take with you?"
Mahler 2nd Symphony conducted by Klemperer, The Bible and a Bentley
from Joan Clarke
"Do you listen to other types of music such as jazz and pop and if so who are your favourite groups/artists?"
I do listen to other types of music, especially pop and some jazz. My favourites are The Beatles and John Dankworth (who incidentally gave me my first job)
from Peter Graff
"Is it true that you have a tractor?"
Yes, but it's not so grand - just a ride-on mower. My chickens don't like it very much!
from Yoshi Negishi
"Do you always use a baton and why is it that some conductors don’t?"
I don't always use a baton. Sometimes when the music is very gentle it helps, and the orchestra can often listen to each other more easily if you are less obtrusive!
from Angharad Lewis
"At what age did you realise that you wanted to become a conductor?"
I have always been a conductor, but I spent 25 years learning how to do it in the first chair of the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Only relatively recently did I decide to become full time after stepping in at short notice for Lorin Maazel
from Peter Le Salle
"Are there any works that are notoriously difficult for conductors to conduct and if so what are they?"
Everything by Mozart. Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, to name but a few!
