Your first job as a musician?
Playing background music at the American Embassy Residence in Regents Park. Not one note we played could be heard above the chatter.
Your instrument?
A beautiful Stradivarius cello made when the great man was eighty-two. Though small in size it can be quite noisy when encouraged. It is a privilege playing something as lovely as this.
Funniest musical moment?
Playing a piano trio recital in the open air underneath a mulberry tree in Plovdiv live on Bulgarian Radio in a hailstorm.
Worst musical moment?
Rehearsing Beethoven's Triple Concerto with the Kazakh State Philharmonic Orchestra at 10.30am after a six hour minivan journey from Bishkek along potholed roads through the snow.
Favourite LCO concert?
Always the last one we did...so make sure you are at the next one...
Hobbies?
Clay pigeon shooting after dropping the kids off at school. I have a theory that it is very similar to playing the cello...
Children? Are they musical?
A girl and two boys. They enjoy all sorts of things including music. The older two are beginning to think I ski too slowly.
Favourite food?
Goose - but not more than once a year.
And drink?
Dusty old fine wine.
Desert Island Disc?
Anything conducted by Carlos Kleiber.
